March 2008: As the Texas primary got under way on March 4, conservative talk radio host Mark Davis fielded a flurry of calls on his morning program from listeners and even former President Bill Clinton. Earlier in the day, I posted this video blog where DMN political writer Gromer Jeffers Jr. offered his astute preview of the election.

#30 – Egrets hanging around for winter
February 2008: Great egrets usually migrate south for the winter, but recent warm winters in North Texas allow these egrets on Lewisville Lake to find food here year-round. #27 – Quakertown stars in new museum
February 2008: The new Denton County African American Museum, which opens Feb. 16, sheds new light on Quakertown, a close-knit black community in Denton that thrived for decades before it was razed in the early 1920s to make room for a voter-approved park. The museum also will highlight other stories of black history from around the county.

#26 – Dole, Daschle, Leppert talk politics
February 2008: Former U.S. senators Bob Dole and Tom Daschle weighed in on the presidential primaries Wednesday during a Dallas taping session for Texas Monthly Talks. Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert also was a featured guest. The shows will air separately over the next few weeks on Texas PBS stations.

#25 – Fires slow down traffic in Denton
January 2008: Officials reopened I-35 in Denton Tuesday after brush fires fanned by high winds temporarily shut down the interstate. The southbound frontage road remained closed while firefighters worked to extinguish the fires.

January 2008: Local photographer Robert McCullough still has mixed feelings about his iconic shot of the Columbia disaster. I also wrote several stories for our Sunday package on the fifth anniversary of the space shuttle accident.

#23 – Fire kills Anna woman, 86
January 2008: Alma Nicholson, 86, was killed Tuesday morning in a mobile home fire despite her son’s efforts to rescue her. The Collin County fire marshal says the woman had two electric space heaters in her bedroom.
